Koi Ponds, Liners and Water feature bases
Constructing your own garden fish pond?
This is definitely something that can be done yourself if you don't mind rolling up your sleeves!
What material should I use to build my pond?
The first decision you need to make is what type of pond you would like to have, a natural look or a more formal-looking fish pond.
Natural Fish Ponds
Ponds can be made of any material such as EPDM rubber liner, concrete or a free form prefabricated pond.
Liner and pre-fab koi ponds are definitely easiest for any DIY person to install. It's simply a case of digging a hole to shape, putting the pond in and doing some rock work around the edging of the pond and within.
Here is a great example of how to build a natural-looking backyard fish pond.
Concrete ponds require a bit more skill and require sealing once the concrete is set. You may want to consider letting the professionals do this for you to avoid leaks.
Formal Fish Ponds
Formal fish pond and water features are usually some type of geometric shape, such as a square, rectangle or circle. We have a large range of prefabricated ponds to suit this application or you can build the pond by pouring a 100mm slab and building up the walls.
If you are using a prefabricated koi pond you will need to have the sides of the pond fully supported, whether that be in the ground or built up with walls.
In most cases, it would be better to get a professional in to build a fish pond like this for you.

Fish Pond Liner
We stock only the thickest EDPM fish pond liner supplying liner to many trades around Sydney. Although it is more expensive than PVC liner, we only stock and recommend EPDM rubber liner as it is UV stablised meaning that it will not break down in sunlight. All the other fish pond liners do, which mean that 3 or 4 years down the track your pond WILL leak, and the liner will need to be replaced. EPDM liner is guaranteed for 20 years. That's why we sell it and nothing else...
Firestone EPDM liner is 1.2 mm thick and comes in widths of 3m, 4.8m and 6m. We can get it at any length up to 30 metres.
$25 per square metre. You can purchase quality EPDM pond liner from here
Fibreglass Fish Ponds and Plastic Pre-fabricated Fish Ponds
The tanks are slightly tapered from top to bottom. They are strong and reliable and will cost you a fraction of the cost of a concrete cement rendered and fibreglass sealed pond.
We stock many pre-fabricated ponds at our Sydney store, which you can see here If you are building, designing or
thinking about having a fish pond and need some help in the process, please get in touch with us! We can guide you on
