Keep your aquarium clean, clear, and safe with the right fish tank filter.
Fish tank filters are one of the most important pieces of equipment in any aquarium. A good filter removes debris, processes fish waste, and supports beneficial bacteria that convert harmful toxins like ammonia and nitrite into safer forms. This helps keep your water clean, clear, and healthy for fish, shrimp, and plants.
Whether you’re setting up your first tank or upgrading an older filter, choosing the right filtration system from the beginning saves you time, hassle, and money in the long run. If you’re unsure which option is best, contact us — we’re here to help with free advice.
Aquarium filters pull water through different types of filtration media:
Mechanical filtration traps solid waste, leftover food, and other particles before they break down.
Biological filtration provides a surface for beneficial bacteria to grow. These bacteria convert ammonia and nitrite (both toxic to fish) into less harmful nitrate.
Chemical filtration, like activated carbon, can also be used to remove impurities, odours, and discoloration from the water.
Together, these filtration processes maintain water quality and help create a stable, healthy environment.
The main job of a filter is to provide safe water quality for livestock. In a tank with no filtration harmful toxins such as ammonia and nitrite will build up – if not filtered out this can quickly kill your fish and plants (this is why fish kept in bowls rarely live to their full lifespan!). No filtration will also result in murky water, more algae and more sludge.
We stock a wide range of fish tank filters to suit all tank sizes, budgets, and experience levels. Here are some of the main types you’ll find:
Canister Filters
External filters ideal for medium to large tanks. They provide powerful mechanical and biological filtration and are easy to maintain. Water is pumped out of the tank, into an external canister full of filtration media, and then returned to the tank clean. These are great because the filter is located outside the aquarium, meaning no bulky or unattractive equipment in the water!
Internal Filters
Internal filters are compact units that sit inside the aquarium. Great for small to mid-size tanks, these filters are super easy to install and maintain. Simply plug them in, sink them into the water and you’re good to go.
Hang-On Back Filters (HOB)
Popular for their convenience. These filters hang on the back of the tank, combining effective filtration with simple access for cleaning. A HOB filter gives you the simplicity of an internal filter with the sleek external look of a cansiter filter
Sponge Filters
Sponge filters are just that, a sponge! The same sponge will capture solid waste and also house bacteria to filter out the invisible pollutants. These require a small powerhead or air pump in order to run. They are perfect for breeding tanks, fry tanks, shrimp tanks, or aquariums where gentle flow is needed. They’re safe for baby fish.
