Japanese Koi (sometimes spelled coy or koy) are different to common carp which are the pest fish found in our rivers. They have been selectively bred for thousands of years in Japan to have beautiful colours and patterns that are truly a sight to behold!
The oldest koi in Japan is meant to be 226 years old! Whether this is true or not is up for debate. But there is no doubt that these fish have been a beautiful part of Japanese culture and considered a symbol of good luck for many hundreds of years.
Commonly, koi fish have a lifespan of around 20 years old or so.
Japanese Carp require koi ponds of at least 1000 litres with a good quality pump and filter. We reccomend no more than 5 fish per 1000L of water.
Breeding koi fish is not hard if you have the space and can be done in the average backyard pond. They tend to breed in the spring time, especially after rains or water changes. They produce thousands of young. Most of these babies won’t show the colours or pattern of their parents.
The colours of Japanese koi carp come from the parents, but the pattern of the markings is mostly random. This means, that even if you bred two “champions” together, many of the babies will have a scattered, speckled pattern. Only a few will have some blotches of even, symmetrical, high-contrast colours.
Although all fish are beautiful, this is how one makes an expensive koi fish. Our koi we sell have been carefully selected from our trusted breeders in Western Australia. They have a strong bloodlines, vibrant colours and are healthy and disease-free. We only buy the top 10% of all of their fish. These have strong genetic lineage, picked based on their patterns and colouration, meaning that you just get the best!
Although beauty is something that is strived for during the koi breeding process, the most important factor is happiness and health.
Colour, pattern and size are the key factors that will determine koi fish cost.
At any given time we should have koi for sale ranging upwards from $10 babies to the higher price premium adults. Our prices range to ensure we have the fish to suit any budget. Whether you’re looking for a prize-winning show prospect, or just a friendly backyard pet.
All of our fish are in in tip top health and body shape! Sourcing koi interstate does cost a bit more for shipping, but we find that the NSW market has been plagued by uncurable diseases such as ulcers (a koi herpes virus). We pay for quality because we both enjoy the beauty of the fish more, but we are also a business and cannot afford to have diseased fish.
The spreading of koi ulcer disease is likely due to poor practices and the mixing of stock at auctions. It’s difficult to be sure with these fish if they are safe to add to your pond. (A lesson we have seen many people, and even ourselves, learn the hard way!). It’s much better safe than sorry.
Our Japanese koi are only fed quality fish food, including floating and sinking pellets, organic vegetables, and fruit and worms grown on-site. This diet, combined with the genetics of our stock makes for healthy and beautiful fish.
Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, Sanshoku, Bekko, Utsuri-Mono, Kawarimono, Hikari-Moyomono, Asagi, Shusui, Koromo, Ogon, Kinginrin, Hariwaki Doitsu, Hi-Utsuri and Ki-Utsuri.
We have much more than just these varieites too! To see all of our different sizes, colours and types of fish, come and visit our Sydney store.
The Fish Works is one of the few places in Australia to stock the majestic butterfly koi. Butterfly koi have the long flowing tails and fins of some of the goldfish varieties but have the same colours and patterns that people love in
Japanese Koi carp. A definite crowd favourite, these koi are hard to miss as they gracefully move around your pond!
