What pond filter is right for my outdoor pond?

Here at The Fish Works we specialise in pond filtration, that means we always have a wide variety of fish pond filters for different-sized ponds and water features.
There are several types of pond biofilter on the market, all of them are good if they are sized correctly to the fish pond and the type of pond fish you will keep. Larger fish such as koi fish and large natives tend to need greater pond filtration and a more powerful pump, whereas a smaller frog pond or goldfish pond that has lots of plants can get away with a smaller pond filter system.
A good pond filter will acheive 3 things:
1) The pond water will be crystal-clear, all year round
2) The pond water will be well-oxygenated and provide a healthy environment for the aquatic life present in your outdoor pond
3) The pump and filter system will achieve the visual aesthetic you are trying to achieve. A well-thought-out flow design will ensure that the waterfalls are flowing at the rate you want them to, as with the fountains. It will give you the option of turning off the waterfall at night time if noise might be an issue. But it will also achieve it’s main objective of clean, clear, and healthy pond environment.
4 Types of pond filters

1. UV Pressure filters
Pond filters that are pressurised with UV integration are great because of their versatility, as they can be placed next to a pond, far away, above or below. We like that they are both easily hidden from sight and that they are very easy to clean (if you buy an OASE or Aquascape filter). These are our most popular systems.
The uv clarifier sterilises the pond water and prevents green pond water by killing the single-celled algae.
The are many UV pressure filters on the market, but we only recommend the OASE Filtoclear range, because they have a patented backwash system that is very effective at flushing out the dirt from inside the filters, cleaning them without getting your hands wet and dirty. All of the other brands have sponges inside as well, but NONE of them have a backwash system that actually squeezes out the sponges, so all of the dirt remains trapped in the filter for you to clean out with your hands. Yuck!
These filters sit outside of the pond connected to a pump which will draw water out of the pond, through the filter and eventually return it. You will require 240V of electricity to run to both the pump and filter.
2. All in One Filters
Pond filters that we describe as “All in one” are a combined pond pump, UV filter and biological fish pond filter.
Since no pipework is required, they are easy to install! Simply attach the fountain heads, submerge in the pond and plug it in! It really is that simple. So no pipes to hide coming in and out of the pond.
They are great for small ponds, generally up to about 1000 litres with smaller fish, or for fish ponds where an external pond filter is not possible. These come with a variety of fountainhead attachments, alternatively, you can use the hose attachment to run a small water feature.
The OASE Filtral range is our most sold and recommended 3 in 1 filter, with integrated UV and intuitive design they are straightforward to maintain. Simply unlatch the lid every month or so and squeeze out the two sponges in a bucket of your pond water to clean.
3. Gravity Pond Filter boxes
Gravity pond filters need to be sitting outside the water at an elevated position above the pond. They will have a submersible pond pump within the pond/pond skimmer, sending water up to the filter system where it is filtered and eventually returned to the pond.
Some of them (such as the Aquascape biofalls range) need to be filled with biological filtration media such as bio balls and Japanese matting and can be incorporated into a waterfall filter system to allow it to blend into the landscape better.
The OASE biosmart range is another great option that has the option of adding UV filtration in order to sterilise your water and prevent it going green with algae. This can be done by slotting in the corresponding OASE Vitronic UV clarifier.
These pond filters tend to be larger, so can go much longer without cleaning out and can be used on a medium to large-sized pond, usually over 3000 litres.
4. UV filters for ponds
UV pond filtration units are to be added to an existing fish pond filtration system that is having problems with green water.
Green water is caused by single celled algae suspended in your pond water, this algae is often worse where it is exposed to sunlight and is able to turn your whole pond a soupy green colour. Most algaecides and treatments will only treat the symptom of this issue, UVC exposure will prevent green water from the root of the issue.
The UV light pond filter kills single-celled algae in the pond, making the water crystal clear. It has the added benefit of sterilising water from harmful pathogens and bacteria. Many filters come already equipped with inbuilt UV filtration but in the case that yours does not, or you simply want to add some more, the OASE Vitronic/Bitron range will do the job. These systems require 240V of power and connection to a pump. They can be slotted into pre-exisiting filtration plumbing either before or after water is pumped into a filter.
