There are 4 main (reliable) options when it comes to pond construction:
Typically, fibreglass is the most long-lasting and solid option, though it can be expensive and requires a professional. We like our EPDM rubber (never use plastic liner) and prefab ponds as they are durable and offer good warranty periods. Pond paint is your next best option and is often great for smaller projects such as revitalising a fountain/small pond or sealing water bowls. Our favourite and most recommended pond paint is THIS one.
The PondMAX PondShield Starter 2L is a thick, black membranous sealant designed to protect and seal ponds and water features. Easy to apply and water-resistant, it contains reinforcing fibers to seal fine cracks and provide long-lasting coverage.
Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, algae, loose paint, or rust. Sand old timber surfaces smooth. Porous surfaces may need priming with a diluted mixture (1 part PondShield Starter to 2 parts water), leaving to dry for 1 hour before applying full coats.
Allow surfaces to dry completely before applying. Test moisture by taping a clear plastic sheet over the area for 2 hours. If moisture appears underneath, wait until dry. Stir well before use. Apply with a brush, roller, or soft broom.
Apply in two coats at 0.5 L per m² per coat, allowing 24 hours drying between coats. Each wet coat should not exceed 1 mm thickness. Apply the second coat at a 90° angle to the first for best results. For timber surfaces, apply at least 2 coats at maximum 1 mm per wet coat. For hairline cracks in masonry, prime with diluted PondShield, then fill cracks with PondShield Starter mixed with sand while still tacky. Allow 48 hours to dry before overcoating.
