What Is Ammonia?

Ammonia is a toxic waste compound that will constantly build up through fish poo, decaying food, and plant matter. In a healthy, established system, beneficial bacteria break ammonia down into less harmful (but still toxic) nitrite and then nitrate (this makes up the nitrogen cycle!). However, when something disrupts this balance—like overfeeding, adding too many fish at once, or filter problems—ammonia can rise to dangerous levels before it is converted into safe compounds.

Ammonia is measured in ‘ppm’ or ‘parts per million’

• 0 ppm is ideal (no detectable ammonia)
• Any reading above 0 ppm requires immediate attention

The Importance of Testing Ammonia

High ammonia can lead to ‘ammonia poisoning’. Ammonia poisoning is a leading cause of fish stress and death. It damages gills, affects breathing, and suppresses the immune system. Regular testing helps you catch any spikes early and correct them before they become a problem. One of the first signs of ammonia poisoning on fish is that they will start to turn pink or red, particularly around gills and fins. They may also develop visible veins.
