At the Fish Works, we only stock high-quality floating fish pellets made by reputable brands. These koi fish food brands are formulated to optimise fish health and enhance colouration and do not lead to water quality problems like some cheaper brands.
Only feed your fish what they can consume in 2 minutes. You will find that they eat more in the warmer months when they are growing. During this time, you may even consider mixing in sinking protein pellets to supplement their diet.
Overfeeding is one of the biggest killers of fish! Excess food pollutes the water and leads to problems such as high ammonia and nitrates, low oxygen levels and algal blooms.
Only purchase good quality koi food! Poor quality koi pellets will pollute your water and lead to poor fish health. We also recommend mixing in some finely chopped kitchen vegetables weekly as well. Maybe just for 10 – 20% of their diet. They will love you for it 🙂
Hikari fish pellets are by far the best but are a bit more expensive. They are formulated to enhance colour using all-natural ingredients. These pellets are imported directly from Japan, so you know it’s good! The Japanese are fanatical about their koi and making quality products. This is what we feed our premium koi and is the go-to product for those with show quality fish.
Most people will prefer to feed their koi Nijimi pellets. These are a great quality koi pellet, especially for the price. They are made in Taiwan and we have been using these pellets to grow up our fish for over 30 years. Most of the signature ‘green and red pellets’ look exactly the same, but many brands are made from fillers and are not very nutritious for the fish. In addition to this, they pollute the pond water! Nijimi fish feed is high in protein and the perfect staple for those looking to mesh quality with affordability.
We only recommend quality fish pellets such as Nijimi or Hikari pellets and feed our prized fish a mixture of both
